Cacabugaoan got its name from Cacabugao a town of Ilocos Sur, where the first settlers came from . It is situated near the foot hills of the impressive Caraballo Mountains . it is about five kilometers away from Poblacion and accessible in all kinds of land vehicles Cacabogaoan’s first recognized Brgy. Capt. Was the late Mr. Prudencio Ilasin . Ilocano dialect is predominantly spoken by the people

Blessed by nature with rich soil, favorable climate ,considerable irrigation system and very industrious people, the place is fast becoming a flourishing barangay where farming is an all year round activity of the people.

In 1994 through the initiative of municipal councilor Don Pepito Salamanca , Cacabugaoan and four other barangays of Sta. Maria District .were energized under the rural electrification program of Cong. Ranjit R. Shahani through  PANELCO III. This project did not only give light but also progress , prosperity and peace to the barangay.

On August 20, 1996 , most of the rice fields in the barangay were destroyed  by flash flood brought about by Typhoon Lusing . A large portion of the barangay road near the NIA main canal junction was eroded and created a wide and deep crater big enough to swallow deep mud and a long stretch of the school perimeter fence was destroyed . Such devastations of Typhoon Lusing was the worst typhoon ever to hit the barangay according to old folks.

On November 1998 ,through the initiative of PNP provincial Director . PO1 Sr. Supt . Rosendo N. Ferrer  , whose mother was from Cacabugaoan widening , pavementing and concreting of almost 90% of the roads in the barangay was realized .The project did not only provide comfort and convenience for travel , but also a long stretch of solar drying pavement for the community. Other infrastructure project in the barangay initiated by Brgy. Captain Teodocio A. Caser and his Council included the following deep wells, Brgy. Hall waiting sheds , Multi Purpose pavement and street lightings . This made the barangay more progressive and united .

The unity and reverence of the local folks was manifested in the successful hosting of the first ever barangay level Christ the King Celebration of the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish under Rev. Jr. Numeriano Gabot parish priest. Also the first Basic Ecclesiastical Community (BEC) of the parish which was established here in Cacabugaoan had demonstrated the spirituality and religiousness of the people.

Prominent families in the barangay are the Salamanca , Serquiña ,Nibre , Ancheta and Ibale among others . Some leaders of the barangay became prominent leaders of the town as Municipal Councilors like Don Tomas Nibre Don Aureo Bibat and Don Pepito Salamanca . Second –Termer Bry. Teodocio A Caser is also the incumbent ABC President and serving as an Ex- officio member of the Sangguniang Bayan of San Nicolas.
